Before Starting Rameshwara Yatra:

Get Anugya from vedic brahmins
Ganesha Pooja
Navagraha Preethi (Graha Preethi)

Step by step procedure:

Get Darshan of God Ganesha at Uppoor (Lavana Puri)
Go to Devi Pattanam
Worship Navagrahas in NavapAshAnams
Worship Goddess Durga
Sankalpa for Athi-Sethu Snana
Dhanur Pooja
PAshAna Visarjana (giving stone in ocean) for Pippalada (Sand not recommended)
Arghya for Mahodhadhi ocean,Surya, Maha Vishnu
PippalAdha Tharpana
Deva,Rishi,Pithru Tharpana
Shikodakam,VAsodhakam for pithrus (giving water from Shika,dress to Pithrus)
Japa for Snana sAdgunya
Hiranya Dhana (Gold Donation)

Holy Theerthas (wells,tanks..) at Rameshwaram:

There are Sankalpa mantras before taking bath in all the Theerthams (wells,tanks..) in Rameshwara Kshetra.You can also donate auspicious 22 DhAnAs (gifts) to Vedic Brahmins that are meant for each Theertha to for remedies.

One must do "Theertha ShrAddha" whenever one visits holy Theerthas .It is very Important in Rameshwaram to please the ancestors/Pithru devathas.

One should take bath by wearing traditional dress.(Avoid Pants,fancy dress etc )

Before going for Kashi yatra (Varanasi):

Before going to KAshi Yatra,one needs to do Saikatha Pooja (Poja for Sand idols) at Rameshwaram.You need to split some handful of sand into 3 parts as

1)Sethu Madhava,
2)Veni Madhava and
3)Bindhu Madhava idols.

One must put Veni Madhava (sand) in Triveni sangama at Allahabad to make the yatra fruitful.Likewise one has to bring Ganga Theertha from Kashi and do abhisheka for Sri Ramanatha Swami to complete the yatra.
